It Takes Two Episode 3— Toto I don’t Think We’re in Kansas Anymore
The sun was starting to set; Tsuki in her sadness and anger had bounded up to the well house roof, where she sat clutching the picture to her chest. Her knees were pulled up and she rested her chin on them. She was sure her mother was hiding something very important, something important involving her father. Tsuki did not look like other girls; she was so different, and not just in looks. She had weird cravings, she had claws and she had strange abilities. One would think she was part vampire. Oh yes; she had seen those movies and read those horror books, even when she wasn’t supposed to. Was her father one of the undead? No way! Her mind shouted at her, but then what would explain the strangeness of her appearance and abilities. She just had to find out, Tsuki was not just going to sit here and take it! No her mother would talk, or else she’ll whine and cry until she gets her way.
Tsuki, determined stood. And stomped her foot. She took one step towards the edge of the roof when she felt the tiles start to give way underneath her. Tsuki glanced around wildly, ready to pounce off the roof, but it split beneath her and she plummeted towards the earth. She covered her eyes with one arm and held the picture secure in her other arm. She continued to fall for what seemed like a long time until she finally hit the earth below with a very hard thud. “Ooowwww.” She moaned out slowly.
After taking a couple of deep breaths, she moved her arm from over her eyes and looked up. She must have hit her head and been rendered unconscious, for now she was seeing blue sky above her, instead of the now holey roof of the well house. Getting to her feet, she brushed the dirt off of her of the blue dress with white and red rhinestones and silver crescent moon shaped studs along the low collar and the hem of the dress that her mother had designed just for her. She looked down to the picture in her arm and pulled it back to find the glass frame had cracked. Oh she would probably get in big trouble once she got back to the house. She would get in trouble on two accounts, for running away and smashing the picture frame.
Well it was best to get her punishment over with; she glanced up wondering if she could jump out, rather than climb. She squatted down and leapt up into the air, with a surprised squeal she clutched the rim of the well with her free arm and pulled herself out. What she saw almost shocked her so bad that she almost let go of the rim, Tsuki was looking around at green fields, a few butterflies danced. One swirled around her head as she sat down on the well’s rim. “What the hell!” She covered her mouth instantly with both her hands, looking around wildly for her mother to pop out. If her mother heard her cursing it was a date with the soap.
Where was she? Where was the shrine and the house? Jumping down her black dress shoes came in contact with grass below. “Mama? Grandma? Uncle Souta? Are you there?” She began to walk forward a bit, hearing arguing coming from the east of her, she jumped back and squatted down behind the well, hiding from anyone’s view.
“Mina, come back. Your father doesn’t want you going where we can not keep an eye on you!” Inuyasha yelled coming out of the trees. He looked around, “Just where did that ungrateful girl run off to?” He crossed his arms over his chest glancing around.
Tsuki took in a deep breath, she put the picture down next to her. And covered it with tall grass and some leaves that had managed to blow out of the trees. She peered around the side of the well, and found a man standing there he was dressed in very old clothes, it was bright red, his hair she noticed was silver, like hers. Ooh and he had dog ears on his head. Like hers! Tsuki reached up and lightly stroked her ear. Where the man was standing, she could hear that he was sniffing around for something and looking in all directions. Whoever this stranger was, she certainly did not want to be in his way. Perhaps he would just go away and she could figure out where she was.
A slight movement of silver caught Inuyasha’s sharp eye and his head snapped towards the well. He groaned, just what was that girl doing over here? Once he caught up to her, she would be punished for running off without telling anyone. “Mina if you come out now, you’re punishment will be less harsh.” He waited but she did not emerge. That was it, he was tired of waiting. As quiet as a mouse, he quickly stalked over to the well and reached around and grabbed a hold of the back of her garments and pulled. He felt her start to struggle. “It’ll do no good to resist!” He yelled. He heard growling and the fight turned extra hard as she was still struggling.
“Grrr” Tsuki did not appreciate being grabbed like that. “Let go of me you stupid head!” She shouted as she was being pulled out of her hiding place.
“Stupid head?!” He lifted her up so she was eye level with his. “Where did you learn such words?”
“Put me down or else!” She growled, kicking at him. But she noticed she was easily evaded. “Let me down or else I’ll slice your throat open and use it for a sushi boat!”
Inuyasha dropped her out of shock, she was showing extreme emotion and growling. What had happened to Mina? He then noticed that she was in different attire, she got to her feet and glared up at him, her fingers curled into a fist and she punched him right in the chest. He did not move though.
“How dare you do that to me! Just who do you think you are?!” She growled out harshly.
“Mina, where did you get those clothes and why are you acting so weird.”
She straightened her dress, and flipped her long hair over her shoulder. “For one, my name is not Mina, it’s Tsuki.” She saw his eyes narrow in anger.
“Mina, that’s not something to joke about.” Inuyasha wondered how Mina even knew about Tsuki; he was going to get to the bottom of this right now. “You can not play this way, stop it now.”
She growled again, “Listen you stupid head, my name is Tsuki. I do not care if you believe me. I am not this Mina person you keep talking about.” She decided to take a different approach. She shoved her hand out for him to shake. “Tsuki Higurashi, pleased to meet you, and you are?”
The wind picked up lightly blowing her scent in his direction, his eyes widened. It wasn’t Mina. Of course they had a similar scent, how could he not mix them up, but hers it had a slightly citrus scent to hers where as Mina’s was more like jasmine. “You really aren’t Mina, you really are Tsuki. How did you get here?!” Inuyasha yelled, unable to control his emotions. What he really wanted to do was reach out and hug her so tightly that her little head would pop off. But then how would he explain that to her mother. If they ever met up again. “Is your mother here with you?”
Sadly, Tsuki shook her head. “No, I kind a ran out on Mama, she said some things and I didn’t like them. So I ran off. I didn’t go very far, just to well house. I sat on its roof for awhile, thinking and then when I stood, it broke and I fell. Now I’m here.” She said, then tilted her head, regarding him. “You’re one of my mother’s friends. I’ve seen your picture.”
“Picture?” Inuyasha then remembered about that little box Kagome had brought with her right before the final battle with Naraku, she told him she wanted to remember everyone just this way, before anything unfortunate happened. “Yes I was…am, I am one of her friends.”
Tsuki scurried over to the well and uncovered the picture from its hiding place, “See, this one has you and another guy in it. Although I don’t know who you two are.” She ran back over to him and shoved the photo in his face.
Inuyasha took a hold of the picture and stared at the fifteen year old version of Kagome, he wondered what she was like now. “It has been a long time since I’ve seen her,” He looked at Tsuki and smiled. “My name is Inuyasha, and the other figure in the photo is my half brother Sesshomaru.” He saw her jaw drop.
“That is quite a mouthful to say, don’t you guys have simple names, like Bob or Jim?” Tsuki queried. She noticed he looked confused with the English names she just threw at him. She twirled the shiny tip of her black shoe in the dirt, her face flushing. “I kinda look like you. I was wondering if maybe….you were…you know?” She couldn’t take her eyes off the ground.
He knew what she was asking, Inuyasha moved closer to her and pushed the picture back into her arms, as they closed around the frame he kneeled down. “As much as I would have loved to have been your father, sadly I am not.” He saw the disappointment as her body sunk slightly.
“Oh.” She whispered feeling another disappointment.
“Didn’t she ever tell you who your father was?” He waited until she looked and him and shook her head.
Tsuki looked up towards the sky, “No, she never did. And whenever I would ask about him she would quickly change the subject or have to go work.” She stretched her arms up, attempting to catch a stray butterfly.
“Well I suppose if I had been in her position, I probably wouldn’t have told you either.” Inuyasha felt sympathy for the little girl though, she had gone her whole short life without ever hearing one word about her father. It must be hard for her; but then again, it was probably the best course of action considering just who her father was.
“Why not!? What was so secretive that she couldn’t have told me anything about him? Not even his name or what he looked like! Nothing!” She couldn’t fight the tears forming in her eyes, “All this time, how could anyone go through life not knowing about their other half, how! And why didn’t he stick around, why did he leave us.”
Inuyasha closed his eyes, his fingers pressing against his sinuses, “It is not exactly a simple situation, for one there was probably very little chance for you to meet him considering to you that he lives five hundred years in the past.” And he conveniently left out that her father is a cold, hateful, vengeful, murdering Taiyoukai who strikes fear into the hearts of all Youkai and humans everywhere.
“No way.” Tsuki gasped out, “That’s not possible.”
“Oh but it is, you see that well is sort of a time portal that connects this time period to your time period. I’ve traveled back and forth on several occasions, so did your mother.”
She noticed he was completely serious, “Oh great galloping Godzillas! You’re telling the absolute truth!” Tsuki was so impressed with this knowledge that she failed to hear the grass crunching in her direction. It was when she finally heard it that she turned sharply to the direction and found something that shocked her almost senseless. Tsuki stared at the figure before her too stunned to do anything else except breathe, her mouth was slightly open. She was staring back into the face of herself. “It’s like looking in a mirror.” She whispered.
Her mirror image crinkled its brows together. “What sorcery is this? Why do you look like me?” She was suddenly very angry.
Finally finding the will to speak, she growled, “What! If anyone looks like anyone here, it’s you who looks like me!” Tsuki shouted, shaking her fist.
Mina humpfed and her nose lifted in the air, “Perhaps there is a logical explanation in why we look alike,” She turned to Inuyasha, “And you have that information.”
Tsuki also looked at him, “What would he know?”
“A lot considering that he is my uncle,” Mina looked emotionless into his eyes, “So tell us this secret you have been keeping, I smell the deception on you, you would do best to remember who you are dealing with. Is this a spell or something else.”
Inuyasha didn’t want to be put in the middle of this, but he couldn’t let the girls down. “Come, we will discuss this back at the village.” He put both his arms around the girls’ shoulders and walked with them in the direction of the village.
When two girls who look exactly alike walk into a village they tend to get a lot of stares, especially if the villagers are only used to seeing one. The girls were both ushered into a small hut, where Inuyasha sat down. The two girls did the same. Inuyasha looked at both of them, they were together. Without smiling, even though he wanted too, he spoke.
“Now this is the absolute truth. You two are sisters, twins. Both born to Kagome Higurashi and Lord Sesshomaru,” He tried not to sound bitter at speaking about his half brother. He saw Tsuki tilt her head, which he knew to be a trait of Tsuki’s only. Mina never did this. She was not happy with this news, he could tell. “Your mother was a human and your father a demon, or Youkai.” He did not want to tell Mina anything bad, as her father in her eyes was someone to look up to and respect. “It was well decided in a way that Mina would stay here with her father and Tsuki would go back with her mother.”
“To the future right?” Tsuki said, her brow arching in a way that was very similar to Sesshomaru.
Mina had her hands folded neatly in her lap and she glanced at Tsuki before looking at Inuyasha, “Do you mean to inform me that the female that bore me was from the future? You expect me to believe such a preposterous tale?”
“Well, yes.” Inuyasha answered, “Just look at Tsuki’s attire for one if you don’t believe me.
“I already looked at that very indecent attire of hers, it doesn’t even go past the knees and her shoulders and arms are exposed.” Mina said expressionless.
“Excuse me!?” Tsuki said rounding on Mina, “But I’ll have you know this is how we dress in the twenty second century, so excuse me miss prissy pants, but not all of us had your fine upbringing. Besides my mother is a multimillionaire because of her fashions. She designed this just for me!” She growled out.
“How wonderful for you,” Mina said sounding rather bored, she then looked at Inuyasha. “Can you give us a moment to speak in private.” She was not requesting, she was ordering it.
Inuyasha rolled his eyes and stood, “Yes I can. Just don’t kill each other while I am gone.” And with that he quickly left the hut.
Mina turned and faced Tsuki, regarding her rather coldly. “Tell me Tsuki, what is our mother like?”
Tsuki smiled, “She’s beautiful and kind, and she takes good care of me especially for being a single parent. Her favorite color is green, and she cooks really well. She gives the best hugs in the world; she always talks to me when I am having difficulty since I look so different from the other kids. And she works really hard sometimes late into the night to provide for us.”
Mina nodded, “She sounds like a typical human, but definitely worth investigating.”
“What do you mean, investigating?”
Getting a sneaky look in her eyes, Tsuki wouldn’t have noticed it if she wasn’t looking right at her. “I have an absolutely brilliant idea.” Mina said watching as Tsuki leaned forward. “That we trade places, I can go back as you and you can stay with Father as me. What do you think?”
Tsuki’s brow knitted together. “Have you lost your mind!? We are completely different; it would never work. I mean look at you, you’re all prissy and emotionless and look at me. I’m all modern and hot tempered and I have been told I have a language problem. I’ve had my mouth washed out with soap so many times that I have lost count. How are we going to fool anyone, and what about scent huh? Our uncle didn’t figure it out until I was close enough that I wasn’t you.”
“It just so happens that father has a Youkai illness that keeps his nose stuffed up for awhile, he won’t be sniffing you anytime soon.” Mina stood and started pacing. “Of course I would have thought that you would have wanted to know our father, but if you do not…”
Tsuki jumped up, “I do! Boy do I do. I have wanted to know about him my whole life!” She said. “But there is just one problem, I do not know how to get back to the future.”
It was at that time that an old woman came into the hut, “Forgive my evesdropping, but it is a simple way to get back, you just jump back into the well and it will take you to the future.”
“GACK!” Tsuki screamed. “Who are you, and where did you come from!?”
The old woman smiled, “I’m Kaede, and this is my hut. And I have known about you two, your whole lives.” She smiled approaching the girls, “I was waiting for the day you two girls meet, this is truly a remarkable day. Finally two sisters separated at birth are finally rejoined again.” She clapped her hands together once.
Mina and Tsuki looked at each other, and both of them smiled. Which was quite a shock for Kaede since Mina almost never smiled. The reality finally sinking in to both of them, they were sisters, they were twins. This was truly wonderful. Just when Tsuki felt she was the only one in the world like her, she met someone who turned out to look exactly like her. It is ten times better finding out that they were sisters. She couldn’t resist and she wouldn’t. Tsuki threw her arms around Mina, who was slightly taken back at this show of emotion. Mina felt a little odd, a weird tingle run up her spine with this closeness. She rather sort of liked it and her arms came up and wrapped around her twin.
Finally breaking their sisterly hug, and stepping out into the setting sun, Mina and Tsuki were greeted by Inuyasha but he had a few more people with him.
“See I told you!” He pointed at the girls. “You two didn’t believe me, but here see it for yourself!”
Miroku stepped forward, “So the talk amongst the villagers was true, I can not believe I am seeing this.”
Sango nodded, “It is truly startling in a way, kind of frightening to think that there are now two of them.”
“What do you mean!?” Tsuki felt offended, “how dare you say something like that in front of us.”
Sango grinned, “My, my, she sure does have a temper on her.”
“Feh,” Tsuki looked away crossing her arms in front of her.
Miroku snickered, “One would think that she was yours Inuyasha.”
It was Mina’s turn to be offended, “As if that thing could breed fine children such as us.”
Tsuki was slightly confused, “What is so wrong with him, he looks fine to me.”
Inuyasha grinned, he knew he’d like this kid. “Hey kid, you’re all right.” He ruffled her hair and she growled getting away from him.
“You know I have every right to change my mind about you.” She straightened her hair.
“So are you going to be staying
here with us?” Miroku asked Tsuki. Both of the girls looked at each other, sinister smiles on their faces.
“Why yes I am.” Tsuki answered, she could have sworn her sister kept in a giggle.
“I happen to think she will do just fine here.” Mina said, keeping her smiles and giggles to herself. “Let us just hope that our plan all goes the way we want.”
Inuyasha stared at the two of them with his arms crossed over his chest. “Hmm, now what exactly is your plan?”
“We are going to change places.” Mina said with authority. “I am going back to take Tsuki’s place so that I may meet the woman who bore me.”
“And I am going to take Mina’s place so that I may get to know my father.” Tsuki smiled.
Inuyasha sighed and pinched his sinuses. “Are you sure that is wise, what happens if your father finds out about this. I don’t think he will be too happy.”
“No kidding, he isn’t exactly understanding.” Miroku added.
“It will all go perfectly,” Mina said, “I have thought this through, father right now has an illness, it lasts about a week. Which will give me just enough time to meet Mother and Tsuki enough time to meet father.”
“Why do I get the feeling that this idea of yours is just going to end up in disaster.” Inuyasha shook his head, “But if this is what you girls want to do, then so be it. Who are we to stop you?”
Tsuki grinned. “Come Mina we should change clothing and I’ll teach you how to be me and you can teach me how to be you.”
With a nod, Mina followed Tsuki into the hut where changed clothes and for a few hours they taught each other exactly how to be like their opposite.
Inuyasha and Miroku walked the girls to the well. Tsuki and Mina hugged once more before Mina took her jump down the well, pink and blue swirling lights formed all around her until she felt her knees hit solid earth. Glancing up, even though it was dark because of her hanyou abilities she could see very clearly, there was a roof with a child sized hole in it.
Off in the distance she heard a voice, a woman’s voice it was very pleasing to the ears. She was calling for someone, Mina’s ears twitched once.
“Tsuki!” Kagome called out, she had Souta go and search for her to look in all places in Tokyo. Naomi was on the phone with the police. It had been at least six hours since anyone had seen her. Kagome was going out of her mind looking for her daughter. “Tsuki, I’m sorry please come home!”
Feeling a slight nervousness, Mina got to her feet and shouted up and loudly. “Mama!”
“Tsuki?!” Kagome twirled around in all directions. “Tsuki?!”
“Down here Mama, inside the well!” Mina shouted again, her heart beating faster and faster. She heard the sound of footsteps hurrying in her direction and down some wooden stairs. A face peered over the side of the well and Mina felt her heart skip a beat.
“Tsuki?! Oh my God Tsuki!”
Hurrying as fast as she could, Mina climbed out of the well coming face to face with her mother. “Mama, is it really you?” She whispered noticing there were tears in the woman’s eyes. Feeling something trickling down her cheek, Mina lifted her clawed hand to her cheek and wiped something moist away, looking at it. She had tears too, her chest hitched and she was pulled into the woman’s tight embrace.
“Oh my God Tsuki, never do that again, never, never.” She clutched her daughter tighter to her, afraid that she’ll disappear any moment now.
Mina’s hold on her was just as tight as Kagome’s was on Mina, the girl was suddenly lifted into the woman’s arms, but Mina would not let go. Not ever. She felt the woman turning around and hurrying the direction she had come.
“I found her, I found her!” Kagome shouted, taking her daughter into the house.

Next time on: It Takes Two
Kagome pulled the quiver of arrows on her back as she scanned ahead for any indication that Kikyou had been here. She just had to get the woman on their side, it was the only option they had. Kikyou could give them inside information on Naraku; she just had to ask her. Hearing a twig snap behind her, Kagome twirled around and she came face to well chest with Inuyasha’s half brother. Sesshomaru. Her eyes widened and her heart beat sped up. “Wh—what are you doing?” she managed to get out.
“Foolish human, you set your sights upon the walking dead Miko in the middle of the night without any protection from my wretched half brother.”
She took a step back from him, he was much too close. Was he threatening her? What was he doing here? How long had he been following her? “I am fine by myself, I don’t always need Inuyasha to protect me.” She watched as he arched a perfectly sculpted brow.
“Is that so,” He said a bit arrogantly which caused Kagome to give him confused expression. Quicker than lightning striking, his clawed hand closed around her throat.
“Let us test that theory shall we.”
